Online Math Education
Honestly, I have read several books about online classes and none have been really applicable to mathematics or physical sciences online. There are some web resources, which I will post, but if you have read a book that you think does provide good information
for math teachers that are "going online" soon, please provide me with the book or a review and I will either read it myself or post your review.
This issue is devoted to faculty development and technology (two of my favorite subjects!) Here are direct links to a few of the articles in pdf format.
- Faculty 2.0
"As faculty members confront the expanding impact that technology is having on their scholarship, research, teaching, and students, IT organizations must assess their role in shaping, implementing, and supporting the assimilation of IT into the teaching and learning process." (Hartman, Dziuban, and Brophy-Ellison)
There does not appear to be an email subscription, so you'll just have to visit the website often to see about new material. Here's a description of the web journal from JOMA:
Wolfram Demonstrations Project (Using Mathematica to Illuminate Ideas). The site describes itself as "An expanding collection of freely available,
interactive Demonstrations in math, science, and many other areas - at all levels, from elementary education to front-line research." There are so many cool interactive math applications here that I could probably spend all day here. You do need to download the FREE Mathematica
Player in to use the live version of the demonstrations. There is a link to download this on the website (see below).
MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching)
Okay - this is not a publication, but... It is a GREAT collection of searchable online resources for various subject. You do not have to be a member to use the site (only to rate or post materials yourself). Click on "Mathematics and Statistics" to
browse the collection of more than 1,000 online resources for math and stats. If you don't know how create your own online animations and interactive materials, this is the site for you! Click on
"go to material" to actually visit the Website where the material or resources are stored. (see helpful hints below)
