Flatland: A romance of many dimensions (1884), by Edwin A. Abbott. (Geometry) I have recently re-read this book and found it to be clever and an amazing historical piece as well. Sometimes I am shocked by the author's words and insight into the
collective mind of society. It is very well thought out, the geometry "lesson" it provides about n-gons, angles, and dimensions is excellent and much more interesting than the standard
geometry lesson. There are many options for reading/listening, so no excuses not to read this one (and it's only 96 pages):
- Full text online here (FREE)
- Dover books here ($1.50)
- Audiobook on MP3 at Audible.com here ($17.37, but sometimes you can get your first book free)
I am going to add this to the reading list for my Math for Elementary Teachers class next year. It is an interesting way to discuss geometry and dimensions and the students seem to like it as an alternative to the text. My current class is composing a study guide for the book
and with their permission I will post the pdf version of this when it is complete.
If you have read a book that you think does provide good classroom use, and are willing to provide a review that includes applicable classroom information, please let me know and I will post it.
